Sex for One: The Joy of Selfloving
by Betty Dodson

A Book Review by Deerheart

Sex is good for you! This is what I have come to understand in my life after a great deal of angst foisted upon me by the society I grew up in. I was raised within the Christian Baptist tradition and was taught a repressive interpretation of the Bible. We were taught that the Bible was the ultimate guidebook to life. Unfortunately, the Bible is open to interpretation and it is not always clear what it means and was written long ago. The predominant interpretation of the Bible at that time maintained that sex is bad and this is what I was taught as a child. When I gave up the belief that sex is bad I became a much happier person. I eventually began to view sex as a natural, normal part of God's creation.

In the early 1980's I read a book called Selflove and Orgasm by Betty Dodson. This book had a profound impact on my life. I suddenly saw sex itself as sacred. I began to love myself more and i began practicing self-sex as a form of sacred ritual, an honoring of life itself. This book initiated me into the world of sacred sexuality. It relieved my sense of shame about my sexuality, allowing me to love myself, to relax, and to enjoy sex more. I began to see sex as a natural, wholesome, and virtuous.

The book Selflove and Orgasm, previously called Liberating Masturbation, was later expanded and republished under the name Sex for One: The Joy of Selfloving. The book was illustrated with the beautiful drawings of the author, Betty Dodson of people making love by themselves and with others, and with detailed illustrations of female genitals. As an artist, I was inspired to do my own drawings of sacred yonis (vulvas). As a spiritual seeker, I was inspired to practice my own rituals of self-love-sex.

I was even more inspired by her video Selfloving: Portrait of a Women's Sexuality Seminar, which documented one of her Bodysex Group Workshops. This workshop consisted of a group of women all sharing their personal experiences about sex and overcoming their own sexual oppression and internalized sexual repression. Then the women all stimulated themselves with vibrators until they had several orgasms. This was a great inspiration to me as a man needing to liberate my own sexuality from the chains of repression, shame, and preconceptions. I was emotionally moved to tears by the stories of these women, whose experiences of shaming paralleled my own. Like me, they have all come to know that sex is good for them.

Check out this short, 3 minute video below of Betty Dodson demonstrating her incredible artistic talent, and revealing the inner structure of the female genital anatomy, The Inner Clitoris.

The book Sex for One and the DVD Selfloving are both still in print along with other books and DVDs by Betty Dodson available below.

Love Energy Liberates Creativity

Cultivating love energy activates the flow of creative juices. By awakening and flowing our love energy we become more creative. Human beings are creative by nature. So by awakening our love energy we return to our true nature.

In most people that natural creativity has been suppressed or inhibited by society. Society's rules, laws, and social pressures often inhibit the natural flow of creative expression. This is done directly, explicitly, overtly and it is also done indirectly, implicitly, covertly. These rules and laws are often internalized within us and become part of our own thoughts and feelings. Freud believed that repression of our natural impulses, although causing neuroses, was necessary for the stability of society. He was wrong.

We as individuals and as a society have become entirely too inhibited and repressed and need to escape the bondage of our fears and express ourselves more fully. Repression is not the correct mechanism by which to secure the stability of society. Love, safety, compassion, nurturing, support, learning, and expression are. Creativity blossoms and blooms when it is nurtured with love energy in a safe and supportive environment. Love energy liberates our creativity.

The second chakra, the sexual chakra, is not only our procreative center, but it is also our creative center. When we fully embrace our sexuality, we may also fully express our creativity. When we awaken our sexuality our creativity is also awakened. When we open our second chakra, our creative energy may flow freely. The second chakra may open when it is grounded in safety. Love energy grows when it is provided with a safe environment. Creative expression happens when our love-energy expands and is released through paint or dance or song. Expression happens when we are energized and open.

As a guide to Love Energy Technique and Creative Liberation, I provide you with a safe space, a field of love energy, a bubble of love, where you may be more fully yourself, more expressive, more creative, more energized, and more self-empowered. The Mission of Art
by Alex Grey

A Book Review by Deerheart

"Transformational" describes the artwork of visionary artist Alex Grey. His artwork transforms our way of thinking about the world. This then is the mission of art, to transform the world.

In his book, The Mission of Art, he explains that artists through the ages have been vanguards of cultural change and evolutionary progress. They have lead the way to a better world. This is the role of visionary artists, to visualize a better world and put that vision into concrete form in the physical world, through their artwork.

Artists help us to think about the world in new ways and consequently we begin to feel differently about the world. Such art is fundamentally transformational. It transforms us as individuals, which eventually transforms society as a whole. Just as the artwork of Alex Grey transforms us today, so too the work of Michelangelo, Hieronymous Bosch, William Blake, and Salvador Dali have all transformed society in previous ages.

The mission of artists in today's world is no less important in moving our society forward into a better and brighter future. This book invites us as artists to accept the mantle of power as cultural leaders to create a new and better society and world. As that great cultural leader, Allen Ginsberg, once said, "Whoever controls the media - the images - controls the culture."

This book and other amazing books, CDs, and DVDs by Alex Grey are available to order through the slide show below. You may also find these and other great books about art and spirituality through the Love Energy Bookstore.

The Spiritual Practice of Devotional Art
by Deerheart

My art is devotional art. It expresses my adoration of the Goddess. It is a practice of devotion to the Goddess, to honor her and what she symbolizes. I dedicate my creative energy to spreading the loving, nurturing, and healing energy of the Goddess. When I make art it is an act of devotion. It is a ritual act, an act of love. My art embodies love. The images below are my original art.

What does the Goddess mean to me? The Goddess is multi-faceted. She has many faces, many manifestations, many aspects. She symbolizes and embodies the sacredness of life, beauty, love, nurturing, gentleness, compassion, abundance, intuition, sensitivity, emotion, sensuality, sexuality, and creativity. The Goddess embodies the sacred-erotic, the creative instinct. The Goddess is my muse. She is my inspiration. She embodies the great mystery of life and creativity. It is said of the Goddess, "All acts of love and pleasure are her rituals."

My spiritual practice is to honor the Goddess by nurturing my own body through yoga, breathing, sacred-sex, meditation, prayer, eating healthy vegetarian food, and by drawing and painting. Loving myself is equal to loving other people. I honor the Goddess by practicing good, healthy habits, habits which benefit both me and those around me and the entire world.

My ritual practice is to bow down before and image of the Goddess on my altar. I honor the Goddess Parvati, the Goddess of beauty and the Goddess Sarasvati, the Goddess of creativity. I pray to the Goddess for inspiration. I honor her sacred yoni. The Goddess welcomes my sexual nature. She wants me to have sexual pleasure. She fills my body with creative sexual energy, which strengthens my will and personal creative powers. I embody the sacred God energy of Shiva, the God of dance. The love energy within me builds stronger and stronger. I reach higher and higher states of ecstasy and bliss. As my bliss increases my creative power also expands.

I believe it is the will of the creator, the great spirit, both God and Goddess, both male and female aspects of creation to increase love and pleasure and happiness and peace in the world. By expanding my creative expression, I increase the levels of love energy in the world. My art expresses love and healing for all living beings all over the earth.
